Surfer on a Wave by Robert Pashby was dedicated in 2005, in a
prominent location on the sidewalk of Waikiki across from the
Honolulu Zoo. The City and County Department of the Culture and the
Arts wanted to repair and improve the base of the Surfer on a Wave
bronze sculpture.
The existing conditions of the base included loose moss rock
boulders and a water feature pump pit that was filled with standing
water.
I provided 4 alternatives to the repair of the sculpture base which
included glass mosaics, puka lava cut, flagstone, and flat topped
moss rocks.
The existing low moss rock wall would remain and a new post and
chain would be installed on the top of the low rock wall. This
would hopefully keep the visitors off of the base of the sculpture.
The Surfer on a Wave can soon proudly ride the waves on its new
base.
